Song for Sunday: Joy to the World!

  For the December Sundays I’ll be posting some of my favourite Christmas songs, or just good ones.  This carol became one of my favourites over the last year.  I think it’s a carol that could be song any time of the year and be appropriate.  It’s joyously poetic.

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the earth! the Saviour reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders of His love.

  1. We sang this song in church this morning and one of the lines caught my attention for the first time, I think. "He comes to make His blessings flow far as the curse is found." It\’s a song about His birth, and the joy of it, and this is a powerful thing to say about the birth of a new child. "He comes to make His blessings flow far as the curse is found." That\’s huge. \’The curse\’ covers all mankind and everything that comes as a result of us, but He came to wash out and replace all of it. And it\’s all from Him… "to make His blessings flow"… He puts His work and blessing into motion, and nothing escapes it… this is kind of a weak paragraph but I hope you know what I mean. The whole song is encouraging, and this verse no less.
